Join us for a 10-week immersive clay experience designed to build your skills across both handbuilding and wheel throwing, while creating a collection of functional and decorative ceramic pieces you’ll be proud to use and display.

This term is perfect for beginners through to returning students, with guided weekly projects that progressively develop your confidence, technique, and creativity in a supportive studio environment.

Whether you’re completely new to clay or looking to expand your practice, this course will take you through the full ceramic process — from shaping and decorating to glazing and finishing.

What projects you will make in the term 4?

For term 4, we have designed the class to include skills in hand building, slab building, and wheel throwing. The theme of the term is Light it Up. With each project being based around objects that bring light into our homes.
Whilst we deliver the course content, students are welcome to adapt the skills to their own projects if it inspires alternative ideas from the set projects.

  • Introduction to clay, tools, and studio processes

  • Create a tea light candle house, using skills of design to develop a clay project that illuminates from the inside out.

  • Using the slab roller safely and effectively, learning how to join, attach and design miniature diorama house or object.

  • Focus: hand building, slab rolling, glaze techniques
    Time: 2 weeks

Project 2: Lamp Bases

  • Introduction to the pottery wheel

  • Learn centering and basic pulling techniques

  • Create a lamp base on the wheel that can have a light bulb and light switch added.

Project 3: Incense Burner

  • Using the skills from the previous two weeks, develop and plan an incense burner house design.

  • Create a pottery burner that utilises shape and style to allow the smoke of the incense to billow out as part of the design.

  • Focus: students choice (wheel, slab or hand building), exploration of design and glazing.
    Time: 2 weeks
Bonus; this project can be turned into something Christmas themed in time for Christmas present gifting!

Project 4: Candle Stick Holders and Match Stick Striker Pots

  • Using the skills from previous weeks, design a set of three candle stick holders with a matching match stick pot.

  • Play around with differentiating the same item to stylise and create a series of small works.

  • Play with texture to create a successful self striking match stick pot.

  • Focus: students choice ( wheel, slab, or hand building), exploration of the same object repeated and glazing.

Term 4 is themed around Lighting that makes your space feel a little brighter!
