Frequently Asked Questions

We get it, sometimes you gotta read the juicy information. We hope this section will help answer those burning questions of yours.

  • Each ticket (1 per person), gets you access to a large variety of glazes, brushes, and supplies to create your one of a kind creative project. We have a variety of tea and coffee selections for you to sip up a storm too.

You are welcome to bring additional snacks and beverages to enjoy whilst you paint along (with the exclusion of alcohol, we are working on permits).

Upon arriving to the studio, you will then be able to pick out the pottery piece/s you would like to create. These prices range from $5-$50.

  • You are welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks along to your session. We don’t currently have a BYO liquor permit but will update this FAQ as soon as we do. The Pottage has a variety of tea and coffee that you can sip on during your session.

  • Yes! Booking is essential. We are currently unable to offer a walk-in service at this point in time. This may change in future.

  • Whatever makes you feel the most comfortable.

Pottery glazes are wonderful as they wash out of clothes unlike other paints. We will have aprons available for those who chose to have a little extra protection.

  • The Pottage is located in Ballarat, a 7 minute drive from the Ballarat Station. The closest bus stop is located on Skipton Street and is a short 550m walk to The Pottage. The exact location, as well as parking will be provided once you have paid for your ticket. We currently have the location disclosed to avoid visitors coming to the space when it is not an allocated session time and to avoid walk-ins when a session is in progress. We understand that this may be annoying for those needing to plan their journey to the space. We are most happy to cancel and refund your booking if the location is inaccessible to you and thank you for your understanding.

  • The Pottage is really new and whilst we have plans and endeavour to make the space as accomodating as possible, we unfortunately cannot provide all access needs right now due to funding constraints. We plan to create a wheelchair user friendly bathroom and ramp into the facility in stage two of the renovations.

Access to the sessions is via the driveway. Following it through the gate to bi fold opening doors. The doors require two small steps to enter the premises. This will change in future to be a ramp once funding allows.

The toilet facilities include a narrow toilet entry inside the house. This toilet is not wheel chair user friendly but once funding allows the renovation for a new bathroom facility will be the next steps for The Pottage space.

As this is a new opening, we are all learning how we will interact with the space. As we learn about this we will endeavour to adapt and make changes to suit a variety of different needs in the space.

If you have any questions about accessibility at The Pottage please don’t hesitate to reach out at thepottage.au@gmail.com . We would love to hear from you to make sure we are creating a safe and accomodating space for everyone.

  • Of course you can! However, each person must purchase a ticket. You can book multiple spots at one time. As long as they have a ticket, they are welcome. There is limited tickets per session, booking is required so that we don’t overbook each session.

  • 1-2 weeks. After you create your masterpiece you will sign and date your work before handing it back to one of our helpful Pottage team members. This is when you can either request postage or pickup from The Pottage. We will then glaze and fire your work.

When your order is ready for collection you will have 4 weeks to collect your piece/s.

  • Absolutely! When you finish your session, you will drop your pottery item off to one of our lovely Pottage team members. At this time, you will be able to request postage as an additional fee.

  • We have all heard the stories about big kiln whoopsies!

All the pieces available during the paint your own pottery sessions have been bisque fired already. This means they have already gone through their first firing, making it almost 100% unlikely that they will explode. Sometimes minor cosmetic issues can still occur because clay making can be temperamental. Sometimes pieces may have slight glaze inconsistencies, cracks and kiln shelf marks on the bases. This is all a completely normal part of the process.

We endeavour to avoid this happening at all costs but sometimes the kiln fairies have other plans.

We will let you know if something happens to your piece in the unlikely situation and endeavour to resolve the situation with you through either a discount, gift voucher or refund depending on the fault or mishap.

  • We have a wonderful team of staff that are helping keep The Pottage inspired and filled with joy. As The Pottage gets up and running she will be around regularly. After it is running smoothly Shelby we will be there on occasion due to running her own art business external to The Pottage. Exact days TBC.

  • We have put in our best effort to make a wonderful selection available for you to paint up a masterpiece.

We will offer a variety of different themed sessions to celebrate all kinds of events alongside our regular offerings. Examples of this would be a special session just for mushroom pieces.

If you have any requests, please send us an email at thepottage.au@gmail.com and we will do our best to accomodate.

  • Abolutley! The best part about our sessions is you will get to make your very own food safe pottery. You paint it and we glaze it ready to be used as your new favourite serving ware.

Some items are sculptural where this does not matter and we may offer some non-food safe options in the future. If this is the case, we will advise you on what items are and aren’t food safe.

  • Oh no! We are sad you won’t be giving us a visit. We were looking forward to meeting you.

In this case, please cancel within 48 hours of your session so we can offer up your space/s to someone else.

  • We sure do! We ofer 10% concession discount on all pottery pieces. Just show your card to one of our helpful staff members.

    • Concession only applies to pottery pieces and not the online ticket booking.

  • We have provided 3 hours for you to pick and paint your very own pottery item. Generally, an artwork can take anywhere from 1-2 hours. We have allowed an additional hour for you to chat, sip and walk around.

We will give you time reminders to wrap up your pieces and give you a gauge of how long you have left.

If you are super speedy, you are welcome to add as many extra items as you like or just enjoy The Pottage’s tea and coffee selection.

  • Of course! If you are a business, artist, brand or have a creative idea we would love to hear from you. Just send us an email thepottage.au@gmail.com

  • Absolutely! We would love to have you in our space inspiring creativity.

Send us an email at thepottage.au@gmail.com and we can discuss all that is involved.

  • Absolutely! We would love to have you, celebrate with you and provide a wonderful experience.

Please send us an email thepottage.au@gmail.com so we can discuss availability and what is involved.

  • We really hope that you fall in love with your pottery piece and enjoy the creative session.

We will have a variety of example pieces and sample tests of all the colours so you can pick and choose and know what to expect with your finished work.

However, sometimes, colours don’t always look the way we expect them too. This is part of the creative process and what makes it so fun.

We do not offer refunds to those who do not like their finished results.

AT HOME PAINT YOUR OWN POTTERY KITS…

The General Stuff.

Who can use a Mouldy Bisquit Kit?

Our Mouldy Bisquit kits are designed to inspire the creativity in all those who want to give it a go. Young and old, beginners to experienced creatives. Anyone can use a Mouldy Bisquit kit! Supervision is recommended for super creative individuals who may be tempted to eat the materials or those who like to paint more than just their pottery creation. Please don’t eat anything in the kit, thats yucky.

How do I use my Mouldy Bisquit Kit?

Hey, we don’t want to tell you how to create your masterpiece but here’s a few pointers on how to set up. Your box will come with everything you need except your beautiful ideas. On arrival your Mouldy Bisquit will be wrapped up with lots of padded goodness so it can make its way safely to you. Pottery is fragile so please handle this with care as you unwrap it ready for painting. Set your space up so that you don’t accidentally put the paint where it doesn’t belong. Find your favourite playlist, make yourself a cuppa, and enjoy your crafternoon.

A few extra pointers:

  • Sometimes the kits might take a little time in the post which may cause the paint to settle. Give your palette a little shake to get those gooey ingredients mixing and mingling. If its a little clumpy or you would like it to be smoother, just add a little water and give it a little mix- a-roo. Make sure to apply thinly and evenly so the paint does not crack, if you would like a cracking effect, layer that gooey stuff on!

  • Stuck for ideas? We are regularly sharing amazing pottery creations and inspiration over on our Instagram account. It helps to draw on something you are passionate about, or take inspiration from the wonderful world of Pinterest.

  • Make sure you let each coat dry before adding another. Whilst we are talking about drying, allow your piece to dry for 24 hours before adding your sealant to the piece. If your sealant is a little clumpy add a little water and then go bananas all over your piece.

  • Not loving where your project is going? Thats ok, it happens to the best of us. Sometimes taking a break can do wonders for an artwork. Come back to it when you are feeling a little bit fresh and ready to complete your masterpiece!

Are you going to be doing *insert wonderful vintage bisque here* again?

We are going to try our best to keep a lot of wonderful creations in the shop. However, sometimes we may rotate some of our stock to make way for some other creations that are needing a little more love. We have so many different types of moulds that we want to try and give them all a bit of love when time allows it. Let us know if the item you love is not available as hearing feedback about what you love helps us know what to make more of!

Do I need a kiln to finish my artwork?

These kits are deigned so you can create pottery magic without needing a kiln. We get it, kilns are hard to find. These kits are designed like the old day hobby (sorry people who did this in the 70’s apparently that means you are old) of painting your own bisque creation without the need for a final firing. Each kit is complete with the materials you need to decorate and the sealant you need to protect your work to enjoy for years to come.

Can I buy the bisque by itself?

Not quiet yet! We are a brand new small business. We hope that we can offer this service really soon, but lets just see how the kits go first ok?
We hope to update the shop with plain bisque for those who want to do the final firing at home and for the artists that already have the materials ready at home and have no need for extra kit supplies.

How do I look after my artwork?

Make sure to handle your item with care at all times. They are sturdy pieces but they are fragile and can still break under certain pressure or mishandling. We cannot offer replacement of pieces due to mishandling on your part. Treat it like the precious china that sits in a collectors cabinet.

Once your artwork is sealed up it is now ready to be admired on a shelf, or a bedside table, or somewhere special. As much as we would love to see your creations hanging out in the garden, we can’t guarantee that the weather conditions will not fade and ware all your hard work. If you would like to place your item amongst the flowers outside, check out your local hardware store for a weatherproof sealant.

What? You are SOLD OUT? How do I get my hands on a Mouldy Bisquit?

Sweet Niblets! We are currently out of stock of that item you really wanted! We are trying our best to keep the website regularly stocked with your favourite kit creations. However, we are a very small team that try the best we can. Each Bisque creation is hand poured, cleaned, and fired in house. Sometimes this can take a little while to get enough stock to list onto the website. Please be patient as we work on a restock.

The safety stuff.

Some things to keep yourself safe and clean!

Each kit comes with a highly pigmented acrylic paint. This paint is designed for using on bisque pottery. It has a strong colour that leaves a stunning result. This means that the paint also likes to stay on other surfaces it gets in contact with. Make sure you have set up your space so you don’t have accidents on your favourite dining table, or that favourite outfit of yours.
It will most likely not come out!

Even bisque fired pottery can be a little dusty. Make sure to not put your fingers in your mouth whilst handling your piece and wash your hands after you have finished handling your unpainted project.

Oh yeah, please don’t eat anything in the kit. We can guarantee it doesn’t taste very good and well, I don’t know how good you will feel after the fact. Save your snacking as a reward post project!

Will my piece be waterproof?

The short answer is no. The bisque kits are designed to be completed at home without a kiln. For this reason the pieces are not waterproof. Each kit comes with a sealant. This sealant is to protect your piece from scratches and general wear and tear. We are unable to provide a waterproof sealant in our kits at this point in time but they can be sourced from hardware stores.

Wait? So I don’t need a kiln. Does that make the pottery fragile?

Each Mouldy Bisquit has been bisque fired to 1000 degrees. This means the pottery item has no chemical bonded water in the clay. The clay has transformed into ceramic making it strong to handle and paint without breakage. With that said, the ceramic item has not fully matured so is a little more fragile than the mug you are sipping your tea from. Bisque is a commonly used decorative pottery item but make sure you are handling it with care as it can be fragile and break if it is dropped or extreme pressure is placed on the piece.

The shipping Stuff.

How long will my order take to ship?

We are a super small business and will pack your orders as quickly as possible. We aim to get them out within three business days of ordering but during periods of high demand this can be slightly delayed.

At checkout you will have the option to have multiple kits shipped together or shipped sepeartley. You will not be able to proceed through checkout until you select one of the options. If you have not ordered multiple kits you can select N/A. You will have to choose between:
Packed Together: This means all kits in the order will come in the same box where possible. This means everything will come together but the kits will not come in seperate boxes. This option is great for people who want all kits to come together and they don’t need a box for each one.
Shipped Separately: This means you would like each kit packed in a separate box. This option is perfect for people ordering them for presents or events and need each kit separated for individual use. Our shipping labels are attached to the base of the kit box so it doesn’t impede the aesthetic of the kit when gifting. Each box will be shipped separately which means they may arrive at different times.
