10-Week Clay Term: Wheel Throwing & Handbuilding
Join us for a 10-week immersive clay experience designed to build your skills across both handbuilding and wheel throwing, while creating a collection of functional and decorative ceramic pieces you’ll be proud to use and display.
This term is perfect for beginners through to returning students, with guided weekly projects that progressively develop your confidence, technique, and creativity in a supportive studio environment.
Whether you’re completely new to clay or looking to expand your practice, this course will take you through the full ceramic process — from shaping and decorating to glazing and finishing.

Term class for 18+
What will you do each week in the term for 18+?
For term 3, we have based the projects around items you can use in the kitchen. Items that make your kitchen feel a little cuter while also being practical. Whilst we show you how to make a particular item, you can drift off path and use the skills for your own direction or complete the project directed. This is so you can learn something new each term but also have the creative freedom to create at your own pace.
Week 1: Handbuilding / Slab Roller – Egg Tray / Muffin Tray and Herb Stripper Pinch Pot
Introduction to clay, tools, and studio processes
Create a functional egg or muffin tray and a herb stripper
Using the slab roller safely and effectively
Focus: hand building, structure, joining techniques, and stability
Week 2: Wheel Throwing – Chip and Dip Bowls
Introduction to the pottery wheel
Learn centering and basic pulling techniques
Create 2 cylindrical bowls which we will attach to each other in a later week.
Week 3: Glazing – Underglazing & Transfers
Use underglaze to enhance your egg or muffin tray
An introduction to underglaze decals for adding additional details.
Week 4: Introduction to Slip Casting - Mugs
Learn the basics of slip casting and pour a mug
Explore different techniques to make a mug such as slab rolling, hand building and wheel throwing
Week 5: Slab Roller / Hand Building or Wheel – Berry Bowl or Colander
Refine your clay skills learnt in previous weeks to create a berry bowl or colander
Focus: control, even walls, stability
Week 6: Shaving Cream Glaze
Learn a new glaze technique but adding shaving cream.
Glaze your projects from previous weeks; colander/berry bowl, chip & dip bowl & mug
Week 7: Hand build / Wheel - Salt Pig / Garlic Grater
Design and create a salt pig or garlic grater using techniques learnt in previous weeks
Choose your own adventure
Week 8: Brush on Glaze - Berry Bowl
Learn about brush on glazes
Glaze your Berry Bowl in colours of your choice
Catch up week for any missed sessions
Week 9 : Wheel – Plate / Spoon Rest
Explore stamping and imprinting techniques on slab rolled clay.
Move your piece to the wheel and turn it into a plate or spoon rest
Week 10: Glazing – Finish off all projects
Glaze application using techniques explored throughout the term
Final pieces prepared for firing and completion; any incomplete projects finished.
